nights we pray to goddess Durga for valour. During the next three nights we worship goddess Lukshmi for wealth and prosperity. The last three nights are set apart for the worship of Saraswathy, the goddess of Learning. These three-valour, wealth and learning are indispensable for a successful life on earth

The tenth day is named "Vijayadasami". It was on this day that Goddess Durga vanquished Mahishasura, the buffalo-faced demon who had harassed the deities. This symbolizes the victory of virtue evil, wisdom over ignorance and sloth. It is on this Vijayadasami day that little children ceremonially start learning the alphabet. The Navarathri festival is celebrated not only in temples but also in schools, banks, offices and business establishments. Dance and music recitals are a special feature of the Navarathri festival. People, especially womenfolk observe fast during these nine nights.
